Obituary for
Raymond Becker
Raymond D. Becker, 91, a long time resident of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away at Heritage House in Atlantic on Thursday, May 19, 2016.
Raymond was born to Maude Mountain (Brown) and Earl Adam Becker on July 27, 1924, at the Becker home in Bear Grove Township. He attended country schools, and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1942. After attending Iowa State University for two quarters, he joined the Army Air Force in 1944. He served as a tail gunner on a B-24 bomber during WWII, stationed in Italy. After his discharge at the end of the war in 1945, he married Rosemary Louise Norman on December 2, 1945, at the First United Methodist Church in Atlantic. They resided on the family farm in Bear Grove Township, which he farmed, until they moved to Atlantic in 1990. He and Rosemary later moved to Heritage House.
Raymond was active in the community over the years as a member of the Golden Rule Chapter #194 in Atlantic, and was a Past Patron of the Cumberland OES. He was also a Past Master of Radium Lodge in Cumberland, and Past Commander of American Legion Donald Lee Post #32, also in Cumberland. Raymond was a longtime member of the Atlantic United Methodist Church. Both he and Rosemary also participated in Meals on Wheels and both were members of the Cass County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Raymond's favorite hobby was woodworking, and he had a real talent for it. He crafted pieces of furniture and other wood items for family and friends. He also repaired, refinished, and caned pieces of furniture for people in the community. After taking some classes in wood carving, Raymond began to design and carve many artistic pieces.
Raymond is survived by his four daughters, Ramona (George) Burns of Syracuse, NY, Janice (Fred) Hegner of Omaha, NE, Karen (Tim) Reynolds of Windsor, CO, and Nancy Becker of Lincoln, NE; six grandchildren, Michelle (Bryan) Jarrett, Shelley (Rob) Angle, Patty (Jeff) Yankee, Daniel (Stefanie) Hegner, David Hegner and Jesse (Jourdan) Reynolds; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Alice Ives of Grand Junction, CO; sisters-in-law, Ruth Norman of Atlantic, IA, and Eleanor (Becker) Andersen of Exira, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
