The daughter of Fred and Ella (Krueger) Martens, she was born November 26, 1925, in Brighton Township near Marne, Iowa. She was baptized in the Church of Christ at Minden, Iowa. Growing up south of Walnut in the Dermyer Vicinity, Dorothy attended Lincoln Township #8 rural school and Lewis High School, graduating in 1943. In 1966, they moved into Lewis and she worked for the library for 35 years, retiring in 2004. Richard passed away February 14, 1992. William Jipsen came into her life and they enjoyed a close relationship from 1998-2007, when he passed away. March 15, 2008, she married Bernard Grubbs at the United Methodist Congregational Church in Lewis, and made Adair, Iowa her home until going in the Good Samaritan Center July 19, 2016.

Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Congregational Church in Lewis; American Legion Auxiliary; was a tour guide at the Hitchcock House; taught Sunday School; and delivered Meals on Wheels.
