Obituary for
Elizabeth A. Bartels
Elizabeth Bartels, 86, of Atlantic, passed away Monday, January 15, 2018, at Heritage House.
Elizabeth Ann was born on June 22, 1931, on the family farm near Shambaugh, Iowa, the daughter of Clark Bruce and Clara Ellen (Case) Cavner. She attended grade school in Clarinda and graduated from Amity High School in College Springs in 1950.
On February 22, 1953, she was united in marriage to Clarence Bartels at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clarinda. Following Clarence’s discharge from the military in 1955, they settled back in Clarinda. The couple was blessed with three daughters, Gretchen, Marcia and Marlene. In 1966, the family moved to Atlantic, and she began working at Cass County Memorial Hospital as a cook. She later worked in housekeeping at Heritage House until having the opportunity to nanny and be a caretaker. Elizabeth had a big heart and loved kids, especially babies; taking every chance she could to rock and sing to them.
In 2013, Elizabeth and Clarence moved to Heritage House, and when Clarence passed away in 2015, her heart was broken. Elizabeth’s strong faith and the faith she instilled in her daughters brings them peace knowing their parents are reunited in Heaven and with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was an active member of the women’s group at Zion Lutheran Church.
Elizabeth loved gardening and had a special gift to be able to keep things growing. Many hours were spent enjoying their waterfall surrounded by beautiful flowers in the back yard. This time also included the joys of watching nature feast on the food she had set out. She also took time to cross stitch. Time surrounded by family was what she treasured most, and when it was time to depart ways everyone knew it was a must to call and let her know you had arrived safely at your next destination.
Elizabeth is survived by her daughters, Gretchen (Dennis) Beer of Anita, Marcia (Paul) Gettler of Adair & Marlene (Ron) Wheatley of Adair; grandchildren, Brianne (Nathan) Jarrett of Des Moines, Shannon (Travis) Nordyke of Las Vegas, Nathan (Lindsay) Gettler of Fort Collins, CO, Brett (McKenzie) Gettler of Casey, Natalie (Jared) McCready of Omaha, Taylor (Katie Lents) Wheatley of Panora, Monica (Matt) Fagan of Adair, and Stacy (Travis) Huss of Adair; great-grandchildren, Payton, Beckham, and Ryker Jarrett, Avery Elizabeth Gettler, Gage Gettler, Carley, Belle Elisabeth and Joseph Fagan, and Jerzee and Brystol Huss; sister, Marilyn Wichman; brother-in-law, Charlie Van Fossen; and many other extended family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clark and Clara Ellen Cavner; husband, Clarence; brothers, Robert and Leonard Cavner; sister, Beverly Van Fossen; sister-in-law, Dorothy Wogan Johnson; and brother-in-law, Marvin Wichman.
