Lucile Barnes
Lucile Barnes, 91, died Monday, May 7, 2007 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, Iowa. Her family will be forever grateful to the Center for the kind, loving, and tender care the employees gave our beloved Mother and Grandmother for the past five years.Lucile was born October 26, 1915 to Ernest and Anna Franke in Keg Creek Township, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. She joined two older sisters Leona and Viola. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended Sunny Side Public School. Her score on her eighth grade examination was the highest of any student in Pottawattamie County. She received a copy of Louisa M. Alcott inscribed "Lucile Franke, for a splendid school record. Miss Theinhardt, March 22, 1929.&" Lucile was proud of this achievement all of her life.She married the love of her life Raymond Stanley Barnes on December 21, 1937. They became the parents of Lynn, Judith "Judy&", Wanda, and Penny.They farmed a small acreage for a short time until her father was incapacitated after being badly injured by a hog. They moved to her parents" farm and Ray took over running the farm.Ray"s brother, Onald "Red&" Barnes, convinced them to move to California. Ray became a partner in a lumber business and purchased a truck to use in the business. Neither Ray nor Lucile liked California. Before long they loaded their car on the back of the truck and with Lynn and Judy headed back to Iowa. They settled in Mineola, Iowa where they remained until shortly after Ray"s death.They purchased a small tavern (The L & S Club) in Mineola which they owned for several years. Lucile helped with the business and Ray began driving his stock truck. He was later employed by the Railroad Express Co. until the time of his death in 1971.Shortly after Ray"s untimely death Lucile moved to Atlantic, Iowa. She began selling Avon products and was very successful, winning six Albee awards for her sales.She loved all sports (especially the Denver Broncos), shopping (regularly visiting most businesses in downtown Atlantic), garage sales, and traveling. She visited nearly all states in the continental U.S. and parts of Canada. Her favorite place in the whole world was Nova Scotia in the fall.Lucile was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Leona and Viola, her beloved Ray and his brothers Onald "Red&" and Eddie Barnes, his sister Ruth Smith, and two nephews.She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Lynn and his wife Joan Barnes of Atlantic, Iowa, Judith "Judy&" and her husband Duane Cocking of Newman Lake WA., Wanda and her husband Bryan Betcher of Tucson, AZ., and Penny and her husband Joe Ankenbaur of Council Bluffs, IA. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Lee Barnes Jennewene and her husband Chad of Denver CO, Patrick Barnes and his wife Kristin of Denver, CO, Bryn Barnes of Atlantic, IA, Scott Cocking of New York City, N.Y., Brett Cocking and his wife Jackie of Coconut Creek, FL., Ryan Betcher of Tuscon, AZ., Kyle Andenbaurer of Council Bluffs, IA, and Kacie Andenbaur of Council Bluffs, IA.She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Maya, and Samuel of Atlantic, IA., and Lucas and Xavier of Coconut Creek, FL.You may designate memorials to Cass County Hospice or Atlantic Public Library.There will be a visitation at Roland Funeral Home from 6:00 to 7:00 on evening Sunday, May 13. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Atlantic at 11:00 A.M. officiated by Pastor Don Seeger.
