Obituary for Leona M Bancroft
Leona M. Bancroft, 96, of Marne, Iowa, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2016, at Atlantic Specialty Care.
Leona Marie was born on December 23, 1919, in Shelby County, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Dagmar (Paulsen) Peterson. Leona and her four sisters were raised on the family farm, and she often shared stories of the work they did. Leona attended school in Harlan and later country school.
On June 25, 1938, she married Mike Thomas. The couple was blessed with five daughters. They farmed near the Walnut area for many years where Leona grew a large garden and raised chickens. The family enjoyed having picnics on their fishing trips to one of the two ponds on the farm. Mike passed away in 1964, and she later married Eugene Bancroft on August 1, 1967. After their marriage she worked part-time at Parkway Market in Marne and the Best Western in Atlantic.
She was always one to get up early and get her work done; there wasn't time for sitting around. Her yard and home were always in perfect shape, not a weed or dust to be seen. After the work was done she enjoyed sitting on the porch swing listening to country music and watching the birds. Leona also spent time in the kitchen baking pies and Danish foods. She loved the beauty of Clydesdale horses. She thought the world of her grandkids who remember watching many episodes of I Love Lucy, rolls Sunday after church, and getting together during the holidays.
Leona is survived by her daughters, Gloria (Adron) Terrell of Birmingham, AL, Linda (Wayne Preister) Redler of Marne, IA, Terry (Carolyn Burke) Thomas of Atlantic, IA, JoAnn Thomas of Atlantic, IA, and Vicki Nielsen of Atlantic, IA; step-son, Robert (Charlotte) Bancroft of Atlantic, IA; nine grandchildren; several great and great-great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Mike Thomas and Eugene Bancroft; sons-in-law, Duane Nielsen and Byron Redler; and sisters, Ruby, Mae, Virginia and Ginny.
A private family graveside service will be held at the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery.
