Obituary for Edna Irene Balch (Weatherly)

EDNA IRENE WEATHERLY BALCH

Edna Balch, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away September 23, 2012 at the Heritage House in Atlantic, Iowa, at the age of 85 years.
Edna Irene was born to Roy Marion Weatherly and Etta Fay (Sleep) Weatherly on the family farm west of Bedford, Iowa on August 25, 1927; she was the third of three daughters.
Edna attended country school through the 8th grade and graduated from Bedford High School in 1945. She was involved in 4H during high school - showing Herefords at the Taylor County Fair and also played violin in the school orchestra. After graduation she attended Normal Training for her teaching certificate and taught country school for two years.
Edna met her future husband, John Balch, on a triple blind date and they were married November 2, 1946 in Troy, Kansas. They were blessed with five children; Linda Kay, Margaret Ann, Nancy Lynn, John Michael, and Randy Joe.
She spent most of her life as a homemaker raising her children and for a few years was employed at the Pines in Atlantic. Family was important to her and she loved cooking and baking and left many fond memories of big holiday dinners with extended family. Edna had a generous heart and a good sense of humor.
She enjoyed doing latch hook, playing table games, having coffee with friends, and listening to a wide variety of music.
Edna is survived by her children: Linda Balch, Nancy Balch, Mike (Jocey) Balch of Atlantic, Iowa, Margaret (Rick) Norman of Stevensville, Montana, and Randy (Roxie Stuit) Balch of Clive, Iowa. Surviving grandchildren: Toby (Tara) Norman of Grove City, Pennsylvania, Bethany (Pablo) Calderon, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Stephanie (Jason) Holley of Bridgeport, Texas, Melissa Balch of Atlantic, Iowa, Shane Balch of Bridgeport, Texas, Jason Humphrey of Coralville, Iowa and eight great grandchildren; sister Mary Smith of Nebraska; and nieces and nephews.
Edna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John in 1996; sister Gladys Cox; and grandson Andy Norman.
A funeral service will be held at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2012. The committal service will be in Athelstan Cemetery east of Bedford, Iowa. Pastor Al Seehusen, of Evangelical Free Church in Atlantic, will officiate. There will be open visitation at Rolands Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
