Clyde I. Bailey
Clyde Bailey, 95, long time rural resident of Atlantic, Iowa passed on at the Cass County Memorial Hospital early Friday morning, March 31, 2006.Clyde was born the son of Roy I. and Gladys (Odem) Bailey in Lewis, Iowa on February 15, 1911. As a young man, he fed calves for his 4-H project using the proceeds to purchase a violin. He and his mother and brother formed a small family orchestra and played for programs and home dances. He attended school in Lewis and graduated there in 1929. Clyde was married to Mabel Edna Thomson on July 28, 1936 in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple farmed near Atlantic and enjoyed raising their two daughters, Elaine and Marcene. Clyde's interest in horses started at a young age when he rode ponies to school. He belonged to the Rawhiders Saddle Club and the Iowa Associated Saddle Clubs. He loved attending and showing in horse shows where most of the young children called him "Grandpa". In his later years, Clyde spent many hours making rag rugs on the loom.He is survived by his daughters, Elaine L. Martens of Atlantic and Marcene Arn and her husband, Tom; grandchildren, Rod Martens and his wife, Shelly of Danville, CA, Sandy Frederiksen of Atlantic, IA, Tanya Martens of Des Moines, IA; great grandchildren, Austin Fredericksen, Ashley Frederiksen, Maryn Martens and Grace Martens; his sister-in-laws, Mildred "Sonny" O"Neil of Hemet, CA and her husband Ray, and Rachel Law of Hemet, CA and numerous nieces and nephews.Clyde is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mabel in 1995, his grandson, Rick Arn in 1994, his son-in-law, Larry L. Martens in 2005, and his brother, Boyd D. Bailey in 1994. Open visitation for Clyde's viewing and signing of his guest book is until the time of the funeral. The funeral will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday, April 4 at Rolands' Funeral Home in Atlantic. Pastor Dennis Meyer, of the Saint Paul Lutheran Church, will officiate. From the funeral, the committal will be in the Atlantic Cemetery in Atlantic. The family welcomes friends to a luncheon reception at Roland Funeral Home following the interment.
