Obituary for
Robert Henry "Bob" Auerbach
Robert "Bob" Henry Auerbach
Robert Auerbach, age 94, long time resident of Atlantic, Iowa passed away at Heritage House in Atlantic on Tuesday, December 11, 2012.
The Son of Henry T. and Freda (Brehmer) Auerbach, he was born March 1, 1918 in rural Atlantic. He grew up in Washington Township and attended Washington 2 through the 8th grade. Bob married Leona “Onie” Mary Schaaf on January 31, 1942 in Maryville MO—the day before he was enlisted in the Army on February 1, 1942. Friends laughed when Bob teased, “I married Onie one day and left her the next.” He served during WWII and was honorably discharged at the rank of master sergeant in 1945.
Bob loved golfing and was an avid hunter. He frequented the fields with his buddies and dogs hunting pheasant, quail, deer, and antelope. He could often be found puttering in the garage and making plans to clean it. Bob never knew a stranger, and had many friends. He and Leona owned and managed the Pines Steak House in Atlantic for 40 years. He will be remembered as a thoughtful guy, and the food always delicious—as folks came faithfully from miles around to dine in the atmosphere that the couple maintained over the many years.
Surviving are nieces and nephews, Colleen Sunderman and Joan Sunderman, both of Atlantic; LuElla (Bill) Lassen of Council Bluffs, IA; Elwin Sunderman and Sherwin Sunderman of Griswold, IA and several other beloved nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Leona; their daughter Sandra Jane, in infancy; his sister Blanche (Oliver) Palzer; his two brothers Lloyd (Eleaner) Auerbach; and Wilber (Donaldia) Auerbach.
