Howard Andersen

Howard W. Andersen of Atlantic, Iowa died March 30, 2021, at the MercyOne Johnston Hospice House at the age of 93.

Howard was born in Atlantic, Iowa on August 18,1927, to Harry “Bill” W. and Edith (Bell) Andersen. He and four siblings grew up on the family farm north of Atlantic. He attended school through the 8th grade. Being the oldest child, he came home to help work the farm to provide for the family as was the custom of the time. Howard worked with his father as a farmer and truck driver until he was called into service with the United States Army on October 5, 1950. He served for two years during the Korean War, and most of that time was in Japan and on the Korean front lines. He attained the rank of Corporal and was discharged in October of 1952 with a United Nations Service Medal, a Bronze Star and a Korean Service Medal.

After his years of service, he returned to truck driving and farming with his father. He married Carol (Porch) Andersen February 2,1964. They lived in Atlantic briefly before moving to their own farm which was adjacent to his father’s north of Atlantic. Howard worked hard farming his own land, his father’s farm and some rented land most of his adult life. He continued his truck driving for neighboring farmers and for his nephew’s moving company off and on over the years. In 1993 they sold the acreage and moved into Atlantic where he drove a Southwest Iowa Transit Bus, delivered anhydrous for the local Farm Supply and worked for the Atlantic School district mowing with his brother Claude for a brief season. He was over 80 years old before fully retiring.

Howard greatly enjoyed all his neighbors and friends. They knew him as a humble and honest man which gained him much respect that he would quickly dismiss in true fashion of a humble man. As a young man he played slow pitch softball with a group of mostly single men. Over time his single friends got married and began playing pinochle once a month as couples which they did until health would not allow it anymore. He bowled the “Night Owl League” on Monday nights at the Hawkeye Bowl in Atlantic for years with an ongoing average over 180.

Howard’s faith anchored his life. The Atlantic Gospel Chapel was his church home. For over 40 years he was a member of the local Gideon Camp. He and Carol served alongside their daughter Jody and her husband Mark every August at the annual Okoboji Bible Conference for years. He and Carol delivered Meals on Wheels until Carol could not do it anymore. He cared for Carol with love and patience through years of dementia. Howard lived out his faith through a life of service.

The last few years of his life were spent residing in Assisted Living at the Heritage House where he enjoyed the fellowship of community meals and many activities.

He was preceded in death in the Andersen family by his wife, Carol; son, Sam Andersen; parents, Bill and Edith Andersen; brother, Claude Andersen; sister and brother-in-law, Ethel and Robert Euken; sister-in-law, Sandra Andersen; and nephew, Steve Miller.

Howard is survived by his daughter, Jody Ann (Mark) Stevenson; daughter-in-law, Jody Jean Andersen; grandchildren, Amber (Ryan) DeYoung, Seth (Katie) Stevenson, Eric (Kelly) Andersen, and Max (Amanda) Andersen; as well as nine great-grandchildren, Summer, Finley, Charlotte, Alexandria and Max Andersen, Aviana and MacKenzie DeYoung, and Bennett and Brody Stevenson.
