Obituary for Annie Alff

Annie Alff, 97, a resident of Oakland Manor in Oakland, passed away there early Sunday morning July 1, 2001.The daughter of Jabo Heinke and Jane (Schlicht) Willms, Annie was born August 13, 1903 on a farm near Walnut. She went to country school through the eighth grade and then helped out on the family farm. Annie met Herman Alff at a dance and they were united in marriage on May 20, 1925, in Atlantic. Following marriage they farmed in the Walnut area and enjoyed going to dances and playing cards. Annie learned to play the accordion at an early age and through the years she especially enjoyed polka music. Some of her other interests were gardening, embroidering and crocheting.Surviving are one son, Lester Alff and his wife, Dorothy, of Avoca; five grandchildren Darwin Nieman and his wife, Connie, of Chillicothe, Missouri, Diane Martens and her husband, Jon, of Atlantic, Terry Nieman of Walnut, Dr. Marcia Alff of Avoca, and Doug Alff and his wife, Eileen, of Walnut; three great-grandchildren, Brandon Martens and his wife, Carey, of Des Moines, Michelle Martens of Atlantic, and Brooke Nieman of Chillicothe, Missouri; two-step great granddaughters, Tina Cortier of Lincoln, Nebraska and Tonya Monday of Edinburgh, Indiana; two-step great great granddaughters, Alexandria Cortier of Lincoln, Nebraska and Katelya Monday of Edinburgh, Indiana; and a number of nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman Alff, in 1980; two daughters, Elouise, who died in infancy, and Arlene Nieman, who passed away November of 1999; a son-in-law, Dick Nieman in 1986; six brothers, John, Bryan, Henry (Heiny), Herman, Ott, and Earnest Willms; and three sisters, Lucy Kahl, Maggie Pierson, and Williemae (Tootie) Whitsitt.Roland Funeral Service -- Atlantic, IowaFuneral InformationServices for Annie were held Thursday, July 5, 2001, at 1:30 PM in the Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic, Iowa with Pastor Ron Barnett of St. Paul's Lutheran Church officiating.
